Newlife Fundraising Challenges

About Newlife

Moderateskills icon

Disabled children have been at the heart of the charity since 1991. As more babies and children survive conditions, accidents and infections etc. more children face enduring disability. Newlife Foundation cares for all disabled and terminally ill children.

Newlife Foundation puts the child's needs first in all we do and all we are. On a daily basis we are the ‘specialists for special children' in the UK. The best way to understand what we do and how we help is to understand the sort of help we give when a call or email arrives from a family making an enquiry, by tracking what happens next we see the range of help and activities Newlife regularly provides.

Ben Nevis

Ben Nevis is the highest mountain in Britain and stands 1344m high, rising from sea level at Loch Linnhe and towering over the town of Fort William.

Going from the bottom to the top of the mountain you pass through 4 different vegetation zones. There is snow on the summit for much of the year; indeed it is not uncommon to find 8 feet of snow on the top during April. Every year we run summer ascents of Ben Nevis, led by qualified mountain leaders.

Our ascent from the visitor centre avoids the foreboding cliffs seen in the photographs, and follows a walking route that will take approximately 6-8hrs at a steady pace (the key to progress on a mountain is steady pacing and not speed and pause).

If you are lucky with the weather then the views from the summit, and even from half way up, are quite stunning. On a good day you can see all the way to the majestic rock spires of The Isle of Skye and looking the other way, down Loch Linnhe to the Irish Sea.

The trip is fully guided by an experienced mountain leader with lots of experience on Ben Nevis!

Hadrian's Wall

This is a guided, fully supported walk along the whole length of Hadrian's Wall. The route passes through some of Northern England's most beautiful scenery and is a complete crossing of the country from one coast to the other. The walk is a total distance of 84 miles, stretching from the salt marsh of the Solway Estuary in the West near Carlisle, to Segedunum Fort in Tyneside, Newcastle, in the East. We choose to walk it West to East to take advantage of the prevailing winds.

The walk is spread over a total of 7 days, giving an average daily distance of 12 miles. Including an arrival and departure day it makes a total of 9 days, from Saturday to the following Sunday. This takes in a variety of scenery from lowland seaside views to the upland parts of Northumberland. The walking varies from well established tracks and roads to fields and hill tracks, and is quite simply beautiful. If you haven't had a chance to see northern England, this is a great way to enjoy it.

We travel to Fort William on the Friday, starting with Ben Nevis on the Saturday morning, climb Scafell Pike Saturday night and finish Snowdon on Sunday in Wales!

This is a tiring event and people participating should have the necessary fitness. We aim to complete each of the mountains within 3-6 hours; however this will depend upon the speed of the group.

The course is guided by experienced mountain leaders and there is a transport vehicle with separate driver with you throughout the challenge.
