Hadrian's Wall

Intro

Moderateskills icon

This is a guided, fully supported walk along the whole length of Hadrian's Wall (A self guided version is also available). The route passes through some of Northern England's most beautiful scenery and is a complete crossing of the country from one coast to the other. The walk is a total distance of 84 miles, stretching from the salt marsh of the Solway Estuary in the West near Carlisle, to Segedunum Fort in Tyneside, Newcastle, in the East. We choose to walk it West to East to take advantage of the prevailing winds.

The walk is spread over a total of 7 days, giving an average daily distance of 12 miles. Including an arrival and departure day it makes a total of 9 days, from Saturday to the following Sunday. This takes in a variety of scenery from lowland seaside views to the upland parts of Northumberland. The walking varies from well established tracks and roads to fields and hill tracks, and is quite simply beautiful. If you haven't had a chance to see northern England, this is a great way to enjoy it.

History

Approximately 1850 years ago the Roman Empire covered much of the then known world (and you thought this site was just about mountains!) It stretched from northern Britain, eastwards for 2500 miles to present day Iraq, and southwards to the Sahara desert some 1500 miles away. Hadrian's Wall, designed to keep Barbarians at bay in the most northern outpost of the Roman Empire, was the most important monument built by the Romans in Britain. It is now the best know frontier of the entire Roman Empire.

Emperor Hadrian (hence the name) ordered the construction of the wall in 120AD along a route from Tyne (Newcastle) to Solway (Carlisle). When eventually completed 16 years later, Hadrian's Wall ran for 80 Roman miles (73 modern miles) from Wallsend (again, hence the name) on the River Tyne to Bowness on the Solway Firth. The wall was typically 6.5m (20ft) high and about 3m (10ft) deep. Behind the wall there were two further rises on either side of a ditch to give further protection. In 1987, UNESCO awarded World Heritage Site status to Hadrian's Wall.

Right, with the history lesson now over, we get back to what we are good at - walking holidays. We provide a guided, fully supported walk across the whole length of Hadrian's Wall. The route passes through some of Northern Britain's most beautiful scenery and is a complete crossing of England from one coast to the other.
