Introduction
Davos is a candidate for the oldest ski resort of them all. It has been developed for downhill skiing since the 1930s. Before that it was a health resort and accordingly has a fine array of older hotels. In addition to being a much sought-after modern resort, the place has an air of old-time grandeur. The equally distinguished resort of Klosters, 8km away, has been combined with Davos so that skiers can enjoy the resources of both resorts.
The British Royal Family and the World Ecomomic Forum cannot be argued with: Klosters and Davos are absolutely superb resorts in their own right. They also happen to offer fantastic and extensive skiing. Davos is at 1500m, and so it gets very regular falls of snow. You can take a lift from Davos straight to the Klosters ski area. The whole area is covered by the the Rega Pass Ski Area, which has 320 km of prepared piste, with 110 pistes, and 38 lifts. The Ski Area is divided into six sections: Persenn, Gotschna, Madrisa, Rinerhorn, Jakobshorn, and Pischa. For snowboarding, Jakobshorn is the area of choice. Persenn is the most extensive area, and is linked with Klosters. The highest point lies at 2844m.
In general, the ski areas have large easy angled slopes higher up in the ski area, while the lower parts of the vallety are steep and forested. More advanced skiers can tackle the steeper black runs winding through forests towards the bottom of the valley. There are 75 km of cross country trails in the area, for those that like to go up and across as well as down.
